Civil engineering students recently learned about designing with steel with two recent trips in the Pacific Northwest. The trips were led by Assistant Professor Hyeyoung Koh.
“These experiences give students valuable opportunities to connect classroom learning with real-world steel design,” she said.
Both trips were sponsored by the American Institute of Steel Construction.
Pioneer Memorial Bridge
The students in senior level steel design classes in Pullman and Tri-Cities along with members of WSU’s chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers were given a tour of the Pioneer Memorial Bridge in Richland by Washington State Department of Transportation bridge engineers. The bridge spans the Columbia River. They also attended a seminar on the fundamentals of steel bridge design and construction.

Metals Fabrication Company
A group of graduate students visited Metals Fabrication Company in Spokane, where students had the chance to watch the steel fabrication process and see steel members.
